About
Welcome to irishpeloton.com!
I started this blog in September 2009, mainly to give myself experience of writing. My day job involves lots of maths and computer code so it was something different to keep the brain engaged on the side.
I began by focusing on the Irish riders Nicolas Roche, Dan Martin and Philip Deignan, but thanks to the stuff I tended to post on Twitter, I gained a reputation for being a good source of unusual cycling statistics. As such, despite the name of the site, I’ve slowly moved away from simply covering the Irish riders and more towards stats and facts which apply to all cyclists past and present.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have written articles for CyclingNews, Velonation, Sticky Bottle, Pro Cycling Magazine and Rouleur. I’ve also been part of Velocast Productions where I write a weekly show called This Week in Cycling History where myself and co-host John Galloway discuss interesting events from cycling’s past.
It’s never dull this sport of ours and there’s plenty of reading out there. So thanks for taking the time to read this tiny corner of the cycling-related internet.

Cillian:
I’m a stock analyst but came to this post through John Brady. You might have seen my twin brother was Irish vets champ and now is 3rd in the all Ireland hillclimb. Email me too, I’ve got a few more questions for you.
This is really good stuff. I’m not sure if I’d advise a future in “cycling” journalism, but you’re on the right track. Keep writing is the important thing.
On Roche, you are right. You are clearly smarter then him, though, so, we can’t expect too much. He’ll figure it out next year if he wins and people smirk.
If you haven’t read him already, may I suggest the books (and personal story) of Malcom Gladwell (Multi-million dollar best selling US author). When he started out, he was struggling, says himself he was no good. The joke of “took me 10 years to become an over night success” is just as true today as before.
